Mechanical Equipment Ignition Risk Assessments

Mechanical Equipment ignitoin risk assessments

OTECSA Consulting have completed various MEIRA studies in the process industries, assessing clients legacy mechanical equipment ignition risks in ATEX zoned areas. Examples have included:

  • A large pharmaceutical production facility with a pre-DSEAR equipment compliance gap. This resulted in a saving, avoiding the client having to replace a lot of old equipment with the implementation of some simple improvements to detect failures.

  • A manufacturing client having to assess equipment because of a newly zoned solid handling process.

  • A chemical manufacturing site dealing with legacy equipment compliance gaps.

Why Carry Out MEIRA?

Mechanical ignition sources (most commonly comprising: hot surfaces, sparks, and static generation) are some of the ignition sources to be assessed in a DSEAR Risk Assessment. However mechanical equipment is often overlooked as a compliance issue, until it becomes the root cause of a fire or explosion.

Many clients are not aware of their mechanical equipment ignition risks until they have a hazardous area classification study and DSEAR risk assessment carried out which highlights the need to avoid mechanical ignition sources.

MEIRA studies are carried out in line with the latest British Standard BSEN 80079-36 2016 to determine credible mechanical sources of ignition for equipment in ATEX zoned hazardous areas. MEIRA can be part of your solution to ensure compliance with the latest DSEAR Regulations, and can in some cases negate the requirement for equipment replacement and upgrade.

MEIRA is a highly specialised area, please get in touch if you would like to know more about our capabilities in this area and how we can assist with your DSEAR compliance requirements.
